What
is Aloe vera?

- Aloe Vera
Aloe
vera, also known as Aloe barbadensis or simply Aloe, is a cactus-like
succulent plant native to North Africa. Although it resembles a cactus
it is actually part of the Lily family. No doubt you are
familiar with
its appearance, from the distinctive grey-green colour to the spiky,
fleshy leaves.
Aloe vera is known to have been cultivated as far back as Ancient
Egypt, as both an ornamental plant and as a herbal remedy.
You
can grow Aloe vera at home. If you live in a frost-free
climate you
may grow it outside in well-drained soil and moderate sunlight. If your
neighbourhood is prone to frost or snow, Aloe makes an ideal
houseplant. It is easy for you to care for, requiring only a
little
water and a sunny windowsill. You may also grow Aloe outside
in a
heated greenhouse - why not grow it alongside your tomatoes?
If you choose to grow an Aloe plant yourself you will be continuing a
very long-standing tradition!
As
you may already be aware, Aloe vera has many beneficial effects for
your health. These benefits of Aloe vera come from its sap or
gel,
which you may easily observe on breaking open a leaf. This
sap
contains mucopolysaccharides, and it is this compound which has so many
benefits for your health.
Aloe
vera is well known as a treatment for various skin
conditions. Maybe
you have used it as a soothing agent for cuts, burns or eczema? Sap
from Aloe vera eases pain, reduces inflammation and promotes healing.
Taken internally, Aloe vera can help with digestive disorders, such as
colitis, IBS and Crohn's disease.
The anti-inflammatory properties of Aloe make it an ideal treatment for
a wide range of conditions.
